Montclair Orthodontist Speaks at Watchung School Wellness Fair
In March, Dr. Papasikos, a Montclair orthodontist, participated in the Watchung School Wellness Fair. It was a public event where local Montclair, NJ health and wellness experts provided interactive stations and live demonstrations.
Dr. Papasikos spoke about the connection between sleep apnea and ADHD in children. (See this link for more information from the National Sleep Foundation).
Sleep apnea is defined as the blockage or narrowing of the airway resulting in poor oxygen flow while sleeping.
The following are causes of sleep apnea:
- Enlarged tonsils
- Narrow jaws
- Jaws that are positioned too far back
The following are symptoms of sleep apnea:
- Disrupted sleep
- Poor performance in school
- Hyperactive behavior
- ADHD symptoms
The following are treatments for sleep apnea:
- Tonsil removal
- Adenoid removal
- Upper jaw expansion to widen the floor of the nasal cavity
Dr. Papasikos recommends orthodontic screenings starting at the age of 7, because this is the best time to check for narrow jaws and signs of sleep apnea. If you or anyone you know exhibits signs or symptoms of sleep apnea, please visit Papasikos Orthodontics for a complimentary consultation.
