How to Care for Your Teeth During Orthodontic Treatment

Keeping your teeth and gums healthy during orthodontic treatment takes a little extra effort — but it’s absolutely worth it. At Papasikos Orthodontics, we coach every patient on the best hygiene habits to protect their smile throughout the treatment journey.

Brushing with Braces

You should brush after every meal, or at minimum twice a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or an electric toothbrush and hold it at a 45-degree angle to your gumline. Brush above and below your brackets, and along the gumline. Take your time — it should take about two minutes. If you’re not near a sink, rinsing with water after eating is helpful until you can brush.

Flossing with Braces

Flossing with braces requires a bit more effort, but it’s critical. Use a floss threader or orthodontic floss picks to get under the wire and between each tooth. Water flossers (like Waterpik) are also excellent tools for cleaning around brackets and getting into tight spaces.

Caring for Invisalign Aligners

If you’re using Invisalign, rinse your aligners every time you remove them. Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and mild soap or the Invisalign cleaning crystals. Never use hot water — it can warp the plastic. Always brush and floss before putting your aligners back in.

Don’t Skip Your Regular Dental Cleanings

During orthodontic treatment, it’s especially important to see your general dentist for cleanings every six months. Your dentist can spot early signs of decay or gum issues that need attention. We work collaboratively with your dental team to keep your overall oral health on track.
