Life After Braces: What to Expect Once Treatment Is Complete

The day your braces come off or you finish your last set of Invisalign aligners is a moment worth celebrating. But what comes next? At Papasikos Orthodontics in Montclair, NJ, we prepare every patient for a smooth and successful transition out of active treatment and into life with their beautiful new smile.

The Day Your Braces Come Off
If you have traditional braces, Dr. Papasikos will remove the brackets and gently clean the adhesive from your teeth. Your teeth will be polished until they’re smooth and gleaming. You’ll then have photos taken and receive your retainer. For many patients, this appointment is emotional in the best possible way.

Your New Smile Care Routine
Without brackets and wires, brushing and flossing becomes wonderfully easy again. Take the time to establish a consistent routine — brushing twice daily, flossing once, and using mouthwash if desired. Your teeth will be easier to clean than they’ve been throughout treatment.

Getting Used to Your Retainer
For the first few days after your braces come off, your teeth may feel unusually smooth or slightly tender. This is completely normal. If you have a removable retainer, you’ll likely be instructed to wear it full-time at first, then transition to nighttime-only wear as directed.

Watching for Shift
Be vigilant about wearing your retainer, especially in the first year after treatment. This is the period when teeth are most likely to shift if the retainer isn’t worn consistently. If your retainer ever feels tight after a period of not wearing it, that’s a sign your teeth are trying to move back.

Ongoing Check-Ins
