Orthodontic Emergencies: What to Do When Something Goes Wrong

Even with the most careful treatment plan, orthodontic surprises happen. A wire pokes your cheek. A bracket breaks loose. An aligner cracks. At Papasikos Orthodontics in Montclair, NJ, we want you to know exactly what to do in any orthodontic situation — so you never feel stranded or unsure.

Poking Wire
This is one of the most common issues. If a wire is poking the inside of your cheek or gum, use the back of a pencil eraser or a clean cotton swab to gently push it back toward the tooth. If that doesn’t work, apply a small piece of orthodontic wax over the end of the wire to cushion it. Call our office to schedule a repair appointment.

Loose or Broken Bracket
If a bracket comes loose but is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax if it’s irritating. If the bracket comes off completely, save it and bring it to your appointment. A loose bracket won’t cause harm in the short term, but it should be repaired promptly to keep your treatment on track.

Lost or Broken Invisalign Aligner
If you lose or break an aligner, don’t panic. Contact our office right away. Depending on where you are in your treatment, Dr. Papasikos may recommend moving ahead to your next set of aligners or having a replacement made. Try to wear the previous set in the meantime if possible.

Soreness or Discomfort
Soreness after adjustments or after starting new aligners is completely normal. Over-the-counter pain relievers (as directed on the packaging), soft foods, and cold water can all help. If pain is severe or you notice swelling, contact our office.

True Dental Emergencies
If you experience trauma to the mouth, severe jaw pain, or swelling that spreads to the face or neck, seek emergency dental or medical care immediately and then contact our office.
