Did your wire break? Did a bracket come loose? Don’t worry and go into panic mode because it can easily be fixed. If your braces get damaged at some point, it is important that you contact Papasikos Orthodontics as soon as possible so we can schedule you to come in and see Drs. Jacy and Arianna Papasikos. If you don’t take action right away then it can cause discomfort and make your treatment less successful.

Loose Bracket:

Traditional metal braces consist of brackets that are part of your braces that are attached to the front of each tooth. If the bracket comes loose and detaches from a tooth but remains on the wire then just let it be. The majority of the time a loose bracket won’t cause too much harm, however, you should still give our office a call so we can schedule a time for you to come in so  Drs. Jacy and Arianna Papasikos can reattach the bracket to your tooth. If you feel some discomfort or sharpness from the bracket, use some orthodontic wax and cover the surface of the bracket so it doesn’t hurt you.

Broken Wire:

If the arched wire breaks, it may cause the end of the wire to poke at the inside of your cheek or even your gum so it’s important that you call our office as soon as possible. The poking wire can cause bleeding which could lead to other issues so please call us as soon as possible. If it’s not possible to come in right away, you can use nail clippers or small pliers to cut the end of the wire off so that the end is smoother and also apply orthodontic wax to the end just to be on the safe side.

Protruding Wire:

While wearing braces, your teeth will begin to shift slightly which may cause the wire to start sticking out of the very last end bracket. If this happens, please give our office a call but in the meantime, if you can, take nail clippers or small pliers and cut the end off. Then use the orthodontic wax and apply it to the ends so the sharp part doesn’t poke you.

Bent Wire:

When you wear braces, there are certain foods that you must avoid because they can cause the wires to bend. If the wires from your braces bend, the bands that are loose won’t be able to pull your teeth into the correction place. If you notice a loose wire or bent wire, please call our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. The longer you wait, the longer you might end up having to wear braces because they aren’t helping your teeth without strong wires.

If any of the above happen during the duration of your orthodontic treatment please call Papasikos Orthodontics (973.744.2511) as soon as possible. Do not wait until your next scheduled appointment to come in especially if you have a broken wire that is causing pain . If you have questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to give us a call and we will be happy to help you.
